Traditional Thai Yoga Massage is relaxing and invigorating, enhancing flexibility, stimulating internal organs and sedating the peripheral nervous system. Thai massage is reverent and nurturing, exemplifying Buddhist teaching of loving kindness, compassion, vicarious joy and equanimity. The art of Thai Massage was practiced in Buddhist temples, the most famous being Wat Po (Temple of the reclining Buddha). Wat Po is also responsible for the revival of Thai massage, culturally and I highly recommend visiting when in Bangkok, Thailand.
Traditional Thai Massage is a form of massage that has developed in Thailand over the past three millennia. There are influences from both Ayurvedic medicine (India) and Chinese medicine. ‘Thai Massage’ as it is simply known, is done fully clothed and comfortably on the floor.
Thai Massage incorporates slow rhythmic rocking through compressions to Sen (energy) lines, followed by passive joint movements and non-specific, full body stretches. The thumbs, palms, elbows, and feet are used on Sen Lines to encourage energy movement and balance.
Theory holds that 72000 Sen lines make up the human energy field. Any one session works on what is considered to be the 10 essential Sen Lines. Emphasis and technique in Thai Massage is on compressions and stretching but unlike western technique, stretching muscles is not the intent as is the Sen Lines.
Many of the stretches resemble Yoga postures, hence the term, Thai Yoga Massage.
